A New Yorker’s Slice of the Pizza Industry

Samantha Levine, of Brooklyn, New York, enjoys cooking, which is one of her many interests. In a city that relies on the entrepreneur, Samantha Levine is surrounded by the sights and smells of the diverse cultural palette that has come to define New York City, including one of its most well-known types of food: pizza.

The pizza industry has grown to become a $45 billion business as of 2018, one that has been the platform for Slice. Formerly MyPizza, the company was started by the son of pizzeria owners in the city. Instead of following in the steps of his father and grandfather, Ilir Sela decided to develop a pizza app after closing down Nerd Force, a tech company.

The concept developed into an online food ordering app that compiled local pizzerias for the purpose of assisting small municipalities where delivery service was scarce. The concept is a little different than others in that the app only anchors favorite shops at the top, making it easier for users to access and order food. The business works by charging pizzeria owners a fee (a fraction of the cost charged by other apps). In return, business owners are provided “a suite of vertical specific solutions to solve the challenges” independent pizza makers face.
